Programming note: United States vs Canada, IIHF World Junior Championship
Taking New Year’s off this year? Heading out to a party later in the evening? Looking for something else to take up space on your DVR? We’ve got the answer for you: The United States junior team will play Canada tonight at 7:30 in the final game of IIHF World Junior Championship group play. The game airs on the NHL Network in the United States.
The United States team (3-0-0) is coming off a 12-0 win over Kazakhstan, a team Canada (3-0-0) recently dispatched 15-0. In addition to both being undefeated, both teams have been downright dominant: the United States has outscored its opponents 24-5, while Canada has outscored its opponents 28-2.
The players to watch? For Canada there’s center John Tavares (#19) (the likely number one overall pick in 2009’s draft) and a pair of blueliners picked fourth overall, Alex Pietrangelo (#10) and Thomas Hickey (#4), the team’s captain who was picked one slot ahead of Karl Alzner. Capitals seventh round pick Stefan Della Rovere (#15) has been dealing with an injury but is expected to play.
The focus on the United States team will likely be on goalie Thomas McCollum (#30), who’s allowed five goals in the team’s first three games and forward Jordan Schroeder (#19), a 2009 draft eligible player who’s tied with Tavares and Canada’s Cody Hodgson for the tournament scoring lead.
