This is an excellent take, perhaps the best I have seen lately in print, on air or in a blog. Well done and well said, sir.

The problems start in that the old-line hockey press is of course based in Canada, and they have their typical homerism. This is not exactly unique, after all, look at the huge Big Ten and SEC bias in the press in terms of college football. You would think that nobody else's fans even cared if you only listened to those guys. This is of course patently untrue.

Here in Raleigh, support for the Hurricanes relative to the market size has been good and has been growing steadily over the years. Winning the Cup and making a miracle run to the Finals two years before that helped a great deal of course, but it's also remained relatively solid when management decided to put out at team with little defense and a kid in goal and subsequently miss the playoffs the past two years. (Great run and well deserved last year, Caps fans, BTW.)

In short, hockey is alive and well in this very small market, it's going to continue to prosper in DC, and these things serve to prove that guys like Lowe and the rest of the commentators and columnists up in the great white need to actually do some reporting rather than regurgitating the same opinions over and over again.
