Ah, c’mon….it’s some fans having a little fun, drunk on (beer?) the feeling of victory. What would disappoint me more is if a Flyer fan got physical or nasty with a Caps fan. This typically happens during games with NY teams because they have some blowhard fans.
If you talk to the average Flyers fan (I share in season tix, so I go to a bunch of game), they have a ton of respect for AO. He plays with a lot of passion, which we like. So, yeah, we were all a little surprised when Ovie did the pirouette.
So, sure, he got a little four-letter serenade in the concourse and gets booed when he touches the puck. We whistle at Jagr (like he’s a girl) even to this day and that’s been going on since his rookie year. It’s a grudging sign of respect. I’ll bet Ovie would rather play in an opposing arena like Philly, where everyone is on your case, than say, Atlanta, where no one cares.
I can assure you that of opposing players, Ovechkin is not high on the Flyer fan hate list. (Sid Crybaby, on the other hand…….)
It doesn’t offend me in the slightest bit. You know that Philly fans are going to be involved, loud, insulting and (occasionally) profane and I have no problem with that. I also agree that it only become a problem when there’s physical violence or when fans are singled out (for example, I once saw several very loud Thrashers fans haranguing a Capitals fan at a subway station for about 15 minutes. They gave up when they were ignored), but those things are generally the case of one or two idiots…and every team, in every sport has fans that are idiots.
Perhaps my comment about Philly’s drought (not that DC is much better….) came across as bitter, but it was just my way of giving a little ribbing back.
I actually commented on the video on YouTube (not something that I make a habit of) because there were some Capitals fans who were just losing it:
“I really don’t see any reason to get offended by this video. I’m a lifelong Caps fan, I run a Capitals’ website and it doesn’t bother me. You know Flyers fans are gonna be loud and possible profane; that’s just Philly sports. Plus if you showed this video to Ovechkin he’d probably just laugh it off and say ‘What do you expect? They are fans of the other team. I’m glad they’re into the game.’ and go about his day. I don’t see the sense in being more upset than the person the chant targets”.
